Being Weird With My Best Friend

Being Weird With My Best Friend

People are funny.

Some people make me sad.

It’s been a month since I retired from the police department and embarked on a new full-time, work-from-home adventure. It’s awesome. It’s scary. It’s boring. It’s exciting. It’s different than I thought it would be. It’s better than I thought it would be. Everyday is different.

But, the biggest surprise is the reaction of some of our friends. On more than one occasion, someone has said something like this to my wife, “So, what’s it like having your husband home ALL DAY LONG?” This question is followed by an eye roll almost every time. I overheard this question while we were in the grocery store the other day. My wife had gone onto the next aisle because I was transfixed by the cereal aisle. SO MANY CHOICES!!

When I heard the question, I couldn’t resist, I walked around the corner and smiled. The woman said, “Oh, there you are. How’s retirement?” I resisted the urge to say, “Of course I am here. I’m home ALL DAY LONG.” Now, I don’t think there was any malice in her question to my wife. Her question was normal. She just didn’t understand that we are weird. And, the fact that more people aren’t weird like us makes me sad sometimes.

What makes us weird at the Harvey house? Well, a lot of things to be honest. But the biggest thing that makes us weird in today’s world is the fact that my beautiful wife is my best friend. I actually like being around her. We have fun together. We watch the same shows. We have great conversations. Sometimes we sit together and say nothing, and find comfort in the silence. She laughs at my jokes. She’s seen me at my best. She’s loved me through my worst. She’s the best wife in the world!! And, watching her raise our girls takes my breath away sometimes. I pray that our girls turn out just like their momma.

So, the reason that question in the supermarket catches me off guard is because for the last 20+ years, I have left my best friend for 40 hours every week to go to work. But, I have ALWAYS looked forward to coming home to her every afternoon. Summers were the worst. Because since my wife is a school teacher, all three of my girls spent the summer together while I went to work. I can’t wait for this summer! I probably won’t get a whole lot of work done on my business, but that’s fine with me! Summer is a season. I am choosing to spend this season with my family. For once, work can wait because there is no clock to punch.

I love my best friend more today than I did almost 21 years ago when we walked down the aisle, and we aren’t going to let a little thing like retirement change that. She’s my favorite, and being home ALL DAY just means more time with her. We’re weird. We know. And, we wouldn’t have it any other way.

So, what’s it like being home ALL DAY LONG? In a word…Weird…and being weird with her is my favorite!
